Chant Construction Limited / Atco Energen
Conducted a fish salvage operation on the Oldman River at the Oldman Dam in preparation for construction of a Power Plant upgrade at the dam site. Project required review of regulatory permitting, liaison with the site contractor, and salvage of 13 different species of fish. All bull trout were released upstream in the reservoir, and the remaining fish species were released downstream of the dam in the Oldman River.
CH2M Gore & Storrie Limited and Alberta Environment
Conducted vegetation and herptile surveys in Kananaskis Provincial Park to evaluate the potential impacts of a wastewater treatment facility proposed adjacent to William Watson Lodge, and the effects of discharge of secondarily treated effluent into marl and fen wetlands. The project involved review of the wetlands to evaluate their ability to act as receiving bodies, a vegetation inventory, a rare plant survey, a survey for long-toed salamanders, and an impact evaluation of the effluent discharge on aquatic organisms.
The City of Calgary
Conducted Fall and Spring Spawning Surveys on the Bow River from the Inglewood weir downstream to Policeman's Flats in Calgary. Active brown and rainbow trout spawning areas were identified and located on a photomosaic map. The number of adult pair species, general size range, presence of satellite fish, substrate size preference, available cover and distance to cover were recorded. All data was analyzed in a database and recommendations compiled to assist the City in reducing impacts to the fishery during upgrade of the Cushing, Calf Robe, Ivor Strong and Deerfoot Trail Bridges.
Reid Crowther and Partners Limited and United Inc.
Conducted a Fisheries Resource Inventory of a side channel of the Elbow River for the Discovery Ridge Stormwater Outfall project west of Calgary, Alberta. The project involved compilation of fisheries resource characteristics, vegetation and fish habitat surveys, an Environmental Protection Plan (EPP) and correspondence with Alberta Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada regarding approvals to proceed with the stormwater management for the Discovery Ridge subdivision project.
Westhoff Engineering Ltd.
Compiled an Environmental Overview of the Western Headworks Irrigation Canal and the Shepard Slough Complex southeast of the City of Calgary. The slough complex was proposed for expansion to accommodate stormwater discharge from expanding residential communities. The project involved review of existing biophysical resources within the area, potential for historical resources or special status species to occur, and evaluation of potential project-related impacts.
